How long do you cook shrimp?

How long do you cook shrimp?  This is one of the most-often asked questions today.  And the answer is quite simple, most of the time you cook shrimp less than 5 or 6 minutes, total.

Sometimes it will be even less.  The important thing to remember is that over-cooked shrimp is tough and that it cooks quickly.

Very often shimp -- and prawns, too -- are cooked in a fry pan using hot oil or butter.  Depending on the size of the shrimp, or prawns, you'll cook them on one side for 2 to 3 minutes, turn them over and continue for about the same time.  Almost every shrimp cook, when asked how long do you cook them, will tell you that they are done when they are a nice pink color.

Since oil or water -- if you're boiling them -- can vary slightly in temperature when you're cooking the color of the shrimp is a much better guide as to when they're done than your watch or timer.

So use this rule:

  • Turn em pink then take the heat away!
You follow that with both shrimps and prawns and you can seldom go wrong.

Best wishes for good cooking ...
